Herne Bay Pool: Landscape Construction & Planting Project

Location: Herne Bay

Designer: Damien Wendelborn

Implementation: Second Nature

Completed: 2013

Second Nature's landscape project in Herne Bay demonstrates collaboration excellence that brings even the most challenging briefs to life. To make the most of a modest backyard, the client wanted a practical landscape that would be a beautiful and liveable extension of their home. A small swimming pool and a lawn naturally sheltered by the protected Pohutukawa created a stunning, modern garden.

Close attention to detail was necessary to ensure the outdoor space could be enjoyed from all angles. Second Nature's construction team handled the clearance and excavation works, making space to set the project up for success. Effective project management was essential for working around the limited access and restricted working space.

Second Nature's team of horticulture specialists provided the finishing touches, installing and maintaining amenities to enhance the garden's planted elements.

Big plans for a small garden

After clearing the landscape, Second Nature installed masonry walls, tile wall cladding, detailed decking, wooden seating, timber steps, and cedar boundary fencing as part of the hardscaping work. Important softscaping elements included permeable paving, soil preparation, planting, automatic irrigation, and lawn construction. These components intersect at the pool constructed by a project partner, a central highlight of this garden.

The timber elements are a central feature, with wooden slats creating an organic look that leads up to and surrounds the pool. Junior palm trees were installed along the boundaries of the landscape, and they will gradually mature to add further lushness.
