Point Chevalier Courtyard
Location: Point Chevalier
Designer: Andy Hamilton
Implementation: Second Nature
Completed: 2023
Exemplifying tasteful sophistication for landscape design in Point Chevalier, this urban courtyard became an essential component of a new property built on the back garden of a 1920s villa.
Elegant, subtle, and compact. This small courtyard makes the most of the space available to create an aesthetically pleasing garden that provides both edible and flowering plants for the owners and the local ecosystem.
This Point Chevalier courtyard was designed to promote sustainability and enhance the sense of space. Designer Andy Hamilton achieved this through an informal arrangement of hardscaping and softscaping features tailored to reduce the garden’s ‘footprint’
“The courtyard demonstrates how even a small space can be designed to bring people and nature together in a truly delightful way.”

Sustainable and sophisticated outdoor living
The Point Chevalier landscape design features high levels of permeability, allowing rainwater to seep, sink, or spread. This reduces water runoff and keeps the water in the garden, which also helps prevent erosion. Thoughtful material selection also makes this landscape more environmentally friendly. A perforated brick screen facilitates airflow and allows extra sunlight to enter the garden and home while adding extra texture to the look of the landscape.
Flowering plants, herbs, and fruit trees were planted to attract and support pollinator species while also providing for the homeowner. Plant species compatible with Auckland's unpredictable dynamic climate were chosen to build a resilient environment—a space for people to relax and a haven for fauna. These qualities sit in harmony with the surrounding architecture for a cohesive, compact outdoor living space.
