St Mary's Bay: Landscape Construction Project
Location: St Marys Bay
Designer: Trish Bartleet
Implementation: Second Nature
Completed: 2022
Second Nature helped bring this St Marys Bay courtyard to its full potential through expert project management and skilled landscape construction. The garden was thoughtfully reimagined as a functional and beautiful outdoor living area.
From humble beginnings in the 1980s, the client sought to update the outdoor space from both an aesthetic and practical perspective. Terracotta tiles and towering Queen Palms characterised the garden unfavourably. Wanting to modernise its appeal, the client presented us with a gardening challenge that would tap into Second Nature’s biggest strengths as a bespoke landscaping service.
With only 140m² of space to work in, Trish Bartleet and the Second Nature team seamlessly integrated the different elements requested into a harmonious combination of softscaping and hardscaping features that preserved a generous view of the Waitemata harbour.
Outdoor dining and poolside relaxation co-exist without distracting from one another. An abundance of carefully selected plants keeps the space green at varied heights and layers. Previously unused and underutilised spaces are now a part of the entertainment space this garden was transformed into.
Spacious outdoor living in compact courtyards
To achieve the client’s landscape project brief for their St Marys Bay courtyard garden, the team carefully worked around the site's limitations: minimal space and limited room to work, difficult access, and complex building work. These factors were mitigated and overcome through careful planning and project management, which meant everyone involved understood when they were needed and where.
Due to the limited space, it was essential to avoid overlapping teams to ensure efficient work. Attention to detail was critical, as the garden would be enjoyed from a close angle by the home’s residents and visitors. Redesigning the courtyard in a way that respected the house's adjacent architecture was also important, with a particular emphasis on enhancing indoor-outdoor flow while maintaining privacy.
